Better Together – Intu Properties plc publishes 2013 CR Report

Intu Properties plc owns and operates some of the very best shopping centres, in the strongest locations, right across the country including 10 of the UK’s top 25.

Intu’s business is oriented around the principle that improved customer experience driven by motivated customer service attracting leading retailers is a powerful virtuous circle creating value for shareholders, employees, communities and partners.

Intu’s CR approach, geared closely to the company’s broader business goals, is based on three key pillars: communities and economic contribution, environmental efficiency and relationships with stakeholders. This strategic approach to CR allows intu to target stakeholder concerns and issues that are directly material to the business.  Intu’s values underpin their approach to community engagement and sustainability issues. Issues are looked at differently and creatively, considered carefully then followed up boldly, genuinely and with accountability.

In a year of real progress some highlights, showcased in intu’s 2013 CR Report, include:

  • 18% reduction in carbon emissions since 2011 base year
  • £1.95 million cash and kind support provided to communities near UK centres
  • 96% waste diverted from landfill
  • Almost 2,500 people directly reached by intu’s community projects

2013 also saw the implementation of intu’s first formal materiality engagement exercise with representatives from key stakeholder groups including local authorities, responsible investment analysts, retailers, suppliers, industry bodies and community partners. Intu’s Chairman and a Non-Executive Director were also interviewed.

In a further step to ensure rigour, objectivity and comprehensive assurance intu’s CR team moved during 2013 to implement a programme to work towards achieving the ISAE 3000 International Standard on Assurance Engagements. This is a recognised international standard to ensure the quality of assurance work, including report verification, as well as assurance on environmental performance, corporate governance, internal compliance, stakeholder engagement and other areas central to corporate responsibility.
