Alliance Boots' ambition is not simply to become the world's leading pharmacy-led health and beauty group, but also a world-leading sustainable business.
This is an international company, operating in more than 25 countries, which is committed to making its business practices socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.
Progress on Alliance Boots' targets is outlined in its Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2010/11, published today, which can be found at: http://ethicalperformance.com/reports/links/allboots11
In addition, one of the Group's top priorities is to work towards a breakthrough in cancer research and, in June this year, it announced it is teaming up with the European Organisation for Research & Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Charitable Trust to create a 'biobank' that builds on human genome mapping.
It is hoped this initiative will aid the creation of new cancer treatments tailored to individuals' genetic profiles, in a move that complements the Group's existing and very successful partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK.
Meanwhile, some notable achievements in 2010/11 include:
Good progress on reducing the Group's environmental impact. The business cut its worldwide CO2 emissions by 4,431 tonnes to 416,391 tonnes in the year ended 31 March 2011.
Alliance Healthcare España's Zaragoza warehouse gaining Environmental Excellence recognition. The Group's Czech Republic wholesale business also gained ISO14001 accreditation without any non-conformance.
Continuing support for a photo-bioreactor project, which should help develop alternatives to many of the petrochemical ingredients in a number of Boots products.
Recognition for Alliance Boots' ethical business drive. In the UK, Boots Opticians achieved top spot in the Sunday Times 2011 Best Companies to Work For awards.
Promotion of accessible healthcare and healthy living, as exemplified by the diabetes starter kits and blood testing initiatives run by Alliance Healthcare in the Netherlands.
These are just some of the Group's achievements, more of which are outlined in the report.
Ornella Barra, chairman of Alliance Boots social responsibilities committee, said: "While we have made some good progress, there is no room for complacency and much remains to be done as we believe Alliance Boots has a tremendous contribution to make to the sustainability agenda.
"We thank and acknowledge our people for their past and future efforts to support this agenda, but we have a lot more to give and are committed to seeking out new channels and innovations that will enable us to advance our participation."
