The Mondi Group has published its 2010 Sustainable Development Report at:
2010 was a milestone year for the international paper and packaging group, marking the end of a five-year sustainable development commitment period, during which time Mondi has achieved or almost achieved all of its key environmental, forestry, social and governance commitments.
2010 highlights include:
Ranked first in WWF's Fine Paper Company Environmental Index
Recognised as best paper company for carbon disclosure by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in FTSE 350 and JSE 100
Included in FTSE4Good and JSE SRI indices for the fourth year running
All plantations in South Africa and boreal forests in Russian managed sustainably, verified by FSC certification
Avoided carbon dioxide emissions of 4.9 million tonnes in 2010
First forestry property proclaimed as a nature reserve: Gilboa estate, South Africa
Lost-time injury frequency rate reduced by 18 per cent
Investment of EUR12.6 million in corporate social investment projects
The report also highlights the most material issues to the business and to its stakeholders, which were identified through stakeholder engagement and Mondi's intensive risk management processes. These issues are: ensuring that appropriate governance is in place at all levels of the Group; producing sought-after products in a responsible manner; securing continued access to raw materials in a resource-constrained world; attracting, retaining and caring for employees; achieving and maintaining a licence to operate through responsible management of operations and their impacts; and consideration for host communities.
Mondi's online Sustainable Development Report 2010 and printed Sustainable Development Review 2010 have been prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) G3 guidelines to a B+ level. The compliance of these reports with GRI G3 guidelines' application level B requirements has been assured by external auditor ERM. The reports have also been checked by GRI.
Mondi is an international paper and packaging Group, with production operations across 31 countries and revenues of EUR6.2 billion in 2010. The Group's key operations are located in central Europe, Russia and South Africa and as at the end of 2010, Mondi employed 29,000 people.
Mondi is fully integrated across the paper and packaging process, from the growing of wood and the manufacture of pulp and paper (including recycled paper), to the conversion of packaging papers into corrugated packaging, industrial bags and coatings.
The Group is principally involved in the manufacture of packaging paper, converted packaging products and uncoated fine paper (UFP).
Mondi has a dual listed company structure, with a primary listing on the JSE Limited for Mondi Limited under the ticker code MND and a premium listing on the London stock exchange for Mondi plc, under the ticker code MNDI. The Group has been recognised for its sustainability through its inclusion in the FTSE4Good UK, Europe and Global indices in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and the JSE's Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
