Nexen continued to make progress on its economic, environmental and social performance in 2009. Highlights included best-ever safety performance, significant progress on the company’s growth strategies, the launch of a new community investment program and roll-out of a company-wide water strategy.

This year’s report outlines how Nexen is meeting growing energy demands by integrating social, environmental and economic factors into its decision-making. It includes a detailed look at how Nexen is addressing important sustainability issues, such as water management, greenhouse gases and Aboriginal relations.

For the seventh year, Nexen enlisted an external stakeholder advisory group to provide guidance and feedback on the report's content. PricewaterhouseCoopers also reviewed selected data within the report.

Nexen is an independent, Canadian-based global energy company, listed on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges under the symbol NXY. Nexen is focused on three growth strategies: oil sands and unconventional gas in Western Canada and conventional exploration and development primarily in the North Sea, offshore West Africa and deep-water Gulf of Mexico. The company adds value for shareholders through successful full-cycle oil and gas exploration and development, and leadership in ethics, integrity, governance and environmental stewardship.
