'Significant progress' is now being made on sustainability issues in the mining sector, according to the latest annual review from the International Council on Mining and Metals.
The organization's newly-published 2006 Annual Review shows that last year the ICMM:
introduced independent third party assurance of sustainable development performance for all 15 ICMM member companies launched guidance publications on materials stewardship and biodiversity protection created a toolkit for 'enhancing socio-economic outcomes' of mining investments hosted a landmark conference on best practice in health and safety, attended by 300 senior industry representatives in Johannesburg was granted observer status to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights and is now one of only two industry bodies in that category recruited three new company members: Xstrata, CVRD and Teck Cominco.
