The online report outlines a number of practical programmes implemented by the mining and metals company on the management of climate change, water, land, biodiversity, waste, air quality, and mine closures - each based around input from local communities and outside experts.

Rio Tinto claims its work on social and environmental responsibility proved valuable in completing its recent US$38.1 billion takeover of the Canadian aluminium producer Alcan. This deal should enhance Rio Tinto's production of recyclable lightweight metal - produced using hydro-electric power.

Rio Tinto also formed a joint venture with BP to seek cleaner uses of coal through the production of hydrogen energy.

The online Sustainable development review is at http://www.ethicalperformance.net/Riotinto_sustainabledevelopment2007.html and in print on pages 83 to 94 of the 2007 Annual report available in pdf at http://www.ethicalperformance.net/Riotinto_financialreports.html
