Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC, the UK's fourth largest supermarket, has published its sixth Corporate responsibility review. In a step that sets it apart from its main competitors, Morrisons has included an independent assurance statement from Two Tomorrows conducted in accordance with AA1000AS (2008) and using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Quality of Information Principles as criteria for evaluating performance information.
It is the first time that any of the "big four" supermarket chains has taken such a step, to provide third party confirmation that claims made in the report are from genuine sources and are made with the backing of sound evidence.
Notable highlights identified include Morrisons' programmes to minimise and reuse food waste and a range of approaches to providing employment for young people and those often excluded. Acquisitions in manufacturing and Morrisons' farming programme were seen as another demonstration of the company building on its vertical integration.
The Review also cites the challenges and areas of potential improvements in their programme moving forward into the next reporting period.
Jason Perks, director of Two Tomorrows, says: "This Review is a positive development by Morrisons in its approach to corporate responsibility and is a fair representation of the maturity of the Company's management arrangements. The enhanced coverage of issues compared to previous years provides a more complete account for Review users."
