Equality call...

August 2013

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has formally written to the Minister for Women and Equalities in the UK to propose that it replaces its statutory disability committee with a new, high level strategic advisory group.

The proposal follows a mandatory review which concluded that while there is a continuing need for an independent group which can provide high level strategic direction and guidance to the Commission, the Commission’s Board is not convinced that there is a compelling case for continuing the Disability Committee in its current format. Instead, it believes the Commission needs to find innovative ways to engage with disabled people, maintaining a focus on strategic work that has a positive and cumulative impact, while maintaining its statutory role to protect and promote their rights.
