EU ban on illegal wood products

March 2013

An EU ban on illegal wood and wood products from entering the market comes into force this month as part of moves to tackle illegal deforestation. The ban brings EU policy into line with that of a range of other countries, including Japan, Australia and the US. Deforestation is a global problem, and it is estimated that up to 40% of the world’s illegal timber ends up in the EU. As part of the EU ban, the legality of all wood traders’ entire supply chain will have to be proven using the Due Diligence System.
