Malaysian villagers protest against petrochemical complex

October 2012

Thousands joined villagers in a protest against a proposed petrochemical complex, to be sited near a small village in Johor, Malaysia. In an increasing trend of opposition to such developments across the country, locals and campaigners complained the plan would deprive villagers of their homes and livelihoods. The Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex is expected to turn south-east Johor into a ‘mega petrochemical hub’, to include an oil refinery, a liquefied natural gas terminal and a petroleum storage terminal.
