UK guidelines for business environmental sustainability reporting unveiled

August 2012

Following the UK government’s announcement that larger UK businesses will need to report their sustainability performance (EP, July 2012, p1), environment minister Lord Taylor of Holbeach has announced a consultation for guidelines to be followed.
The guidelines, produced in consultation with Defra, will allow businesses to report their performance to the public and investors in a ‘clear and concise’ way, and help identify environmental and financial savings.
Lord Taylor pointed out that improving the sustainability and resilience of business is not only good for the environment but good for the bottom line. He said: “This new guidance is another step towards our aim of corporate sustainability reporting becoming normal business practice by making it as simple as possible for companies to show their environmental impact.”
Businesses will measure and report their performance in areas such as air quality and emissions, water, waste, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and natural materials.  The consultation will close on October 17.
