European Parliament backs new extractive firm rules

October 2011

The European Parliament has backed proposed new rules requiring extractive firms to publish their payments “for each project and country they invest in”. Though not yet legally binding, the new requirement for country-by-country disclosure, long campaigned for by non-profits, could be presented by the European Commission to EU member states this month. It has been suggested the move would put pressure on other jurisdictions to do likewise.
