Campaigner Jonathon Porritt has slammed most companies’ interpretation of corporate responsibility as “completely vacuous – and one of the principal reasons why so many people are now deeply sceptical about the role of business in society.” In a foreword to the Co-operative Group’s latest sustainability report, released this summer, he says CSR reports have become “comfortable and reassuring”, and concluded they need more “edge”, “grit” and “challenge about what it is that is still going so badly wrong in the world”. He adds that this gritty approach is exactly what the Co-operative Group’s sustainability report delivers.
