Halliburton and Royal Dutch Shell have been named as the world’s most criticized companies for the practice of ‘fracking’, or extracting natural gas from shale by pumping large amounts of water and chemicals through rocks.
RepRisk’s latest report on media criticism of business finds Halliburton, Shell, Cabot, Chesapeake Energy and Exxon Mobil most at risk. The practice, on which some countries are considering a ban, risks ground water contamination, damage to air quality and waste pollution, and has been of increasing interest to shareholders in recent times.
