Tesco sets up dialogue

June 2011

Tesco has initiated a supplier dialogue programme to meet a 30 per cent reduction target on its supply chain carbon footprint, to be achieved by 2020.

In partnership with the 2degrees sustainability network, Britain’s largest retailer aims to promote dialogue among its suppliers, encouraging them to collaborate, share best practice and find solutions to challenges without raising costs.

2degrees has established a dedicated Tesco Carbon Reduction Knowledge Hub, enabling  the suppliers to talk to one another and share experiences. 2degrees says this is ‘a step beyond the traditional retailer-supplier relationship’.

Issues discussed on the online hub so far include waste contracts, refrigeration energy loss and on-site energy generation. More than 200 suppliers, mainly in the UK, have joined the programme.

Andrew Hill, Tesco’s climate change manager, said the aim will be  to ‘find solutions to problems and share knowledge and innovation with suppliers to reduce costs both financially and to the environment’.
