Volvo to lobby on labellingOctober 2010
A new UK emissions information regime for cars has been proposed by one of the country’s largest auto makers.
Volvo UK has devised a three-point plan to give motorists more information on non-carbon dioxide emissions that is easier to access and understand than the present data.
The company is to lobby the Transport Department and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to mandate a second environmental label covering non-carbon emissions for cars up to five years old, to accompany carbon dioxide labels displayed in showrooms of new and used cars. The US already has a similar label.
During the next few weeks Volvo will introduce a computer and phone application to give customers instant access to emissions information when visiting showrooms, and will set up an Emissions Equality Think Tank to raise awareness about non-carbon dioxide emissions and air quality issues.
Volvo says some cars with low carbon emissions can actually be more damaging to air quality and the environment because of high levels of other noxious pollutants.
