Ethical Performance
inside intelligence for responsible business

December 2009

A ‘socially responsible’ call centre has opened in the UK. The Call Britannia centre in Croydon will employ 100 people who have been long-term unemployed and promises to provide a working environment ‘that does not fit the traditional perception of call centres as people factories’. It is run by the Call Britannia Foundation, a registered charity, and has funding from various sources, including £500,000 ($820,000, €550,000) from the social investment company Bridge Ventures and £350,000 from the Big Issue Foundation. Investors will be entitled to refunds if Call Britannia undershoots targets on employing certain social groups such as single mothers. The organization aims to have ten centres across the UK.
