Supermarket takes the biscuit on palm oil

J. Sainsbury is to use certified sustainable palm oil in its two best-selling biscuit ranges – digestives and rich tea.

The British supermarket chain, which sells 300 million such biscuits a year, says this means customers ‘will be consuming sustainable palm oil on a level never before reached in the UK’.

Sainsbury already uses such oil in its frozen fish and most own-brand soap, and is the only retailer to have purchased substantial amounts of sustainable palm oil.

In a recent survey of leading European food and household goods companies, WWF said only Sainsbury, Marks & Spencer and a handful of other companies had made substantial progress on sourcing sustainable palm oil.

Italian confectionery manufacturer Ferrero last month signed a five-year deal to buy sustainable palm oil from a London-based supplier.

New Britain Palm Oil will build a plant in Papua New Guinea to process the oil separately from non-sustainable sources. It hopes eventually to give Ferrero all its sustainable palm oil, though the deal will initially provide only a quarter of Ferrero’s needs.
