Oil and gas sector starts work on GRI guidance

March 2009

Five multinational oil groups are to work with the Global Reporting Initiative to produce sustainability reporting guidelines for oil and gas companies.

Amerada Hess, BP, ENI, Shell and StatoilHydro will thrash out the sector-specific guidance in a GRI-hosted working group during the next few months.

Issues likely to be considered are greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy investments, emergency preparedness, and programmes to assist developing countries in managing fossil fuel revenues responsibly.

The GRI hopes more oil and gas companies will join the working group, which will also feature soon-to-be-appointed representatives of investors, non-governmental organizations and labour organizations.

Draft GRI guidance for the mining and metals sector was recently put out for public comment until 29 April 2009. That document was produced in a similar way, with input from the World Conservation Union, Fauna & Flora International and the Centre for Human Rights and Environment.
