Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena has become one of the first businesses to use eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) in a sustainability report. XBRL was developed for transmitting financial information, but the Global Reporting Initiative has worked on its use for non-financial data since 2006 (EP10, issue 2, p9). The language offers a way of putting an electronic ‘tag’ on data in a report, allowing computers to recognize, select, analyze and store the information.
