Samsung tops ranking of controversy

September 2008

Samsung was the world’s most environmentally and socially controversial company in the first half of 2008, according to a new analysis.

Monitoring of news from thousands of sources, including newspapers, online media, civil society websites, blogs and newsletters, found Samsung received the most negative coverage among the 5000 companies mentioned.

The Swiss consultancy Ecofact, which conducted the analysis, said the South Korean electronics group was in this position thanks to a corruption scandal, criticism of its role as an Olympics sponsor, and pollution from its subsidiary Samsung Heavy Industries.

Samsung scored marginally worse than Total and Wal-Mart.

The rankings were compiled using Ecofact’s RepRisk database of negative news on environmental and social performance. All sources are graded by severity of criticism. The three most common environmental and social criticisms made were human rights abuses and impacts on communities and ecosystems.
