Foundation offers microfinance scholarships

June 2008

Staff working on Asian microfinance projects will be able to apply for 200 scholarships being offered by the MasterCard Foundation, an independent charity in Toronto, Canada, set up by financial institutions served by the credit card company.

The scholarships are being funded by the foundation with grants totalling $600,000 (£303,000). The students will undergo training at six institutes.

A recent survey by the Center for the Study of Financial Innovation emphasized the need for good management in microfinance, which provides financial services for low-income populations in developing countries. The foundation has devised the programme to extend education and training to microfinance staff.

The scheme is open to applicants in Africa, eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, as well as those in Asia.
