Higgs praised for vital role in Bitc’s early daysJune 2008
Business in the Community has paid tribute to Sir Derek Higgs, who has died aged 64, for the ‘pivotal’ role he played in establishing the organization.
Sir Derek is better known for his successful City career and his 2003 review of corporate governance that resulted in the UK’s combined code, to which companies incorporated in the UK and listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange are required to adhere.
However, he also became chair of Bitc’s environment leadership team in 1999 and worked on the development of its Environmental Index and its Corporate Responsibility Index.
He was on the Bitc board from 1999 to 2006, leading two reviews of the organization – one on its membership pricing and services and the other on its internal governance.
In the City he served long spells with Baring Brothers and SG Warburg, now part of UBS, and was latterly chairman of Alliance & Leicester.
Bitc said: ‘His leadership and contribution were critical at a vital time of our development and he brought to us his invaluable gifts of credibility, confidence and courage.’
