BP faces human rights challengeFebruary 2001
BP Amoco is being targeted by human rights campaigners who want it to sell a 2.2 per cent stake in the Chinese oil company Petrochina.
The Free Tibet campaign held a vigil outside BP headquarters in London on 31 January. It says the company should withdraw its £578million investment in the state-owned concern, which has fuel projects in Tibet, where the Chinese government is accused of human rights abuses. 'We are concerned association with the human rights issues [in Tibet] will damage BP's long-term shareholder value,' the campaign said.
