Reinsurers demand climate change policy

April 2012

US reinsurers have demanded a national policy on climate change from government. The companies, which insure against insurance industry losses, have said that the sector suffered a $44bn catastrophe-related hit last year, and that action is urgently required to prevent further losses. The Reinsurance Association of America says it is in the best position of all industries to gauge the risk of climate change given that its revenues depend precisely on its assessment of such risk. Its president concluded: “We need a national policy related to climate and weather.”
