UK ethical retail funds hit record level

Investment in ethical retail funds in the UK has reached a record £9.5billion ($13.6bn, €11.4bn).

Latest figures from Eiris, the SRI research organization, show 750,000 investors in green and ethical funds, compared with 200,000 in 1999, when just £2.4bn was invested ethically. Today almost 100 SRI funds are available to UK investors.

The figures suggest there has been a recent recovery, as the pooled SRI fund size had dropped to £6.8bn last year, from £8.8bn in 2008.

Mark Robertson of Eiris said: '2010 is a critical year for rebuilding public trust in UK financial institutions. It's clear that increasing numbers of consumers are turning to those financial institutions which offer financial products that make money while making a positive difference to the world.'
