OECD snuggles up to Global Compact

The OECD has agreed to develop closer links with the United Nations Global Compact.

The two organizations will particularly seek to join forces in countries where there are both Global Compact local networks and National Contact Points (NCPs) dealing with potential breaches of the OECD’s Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, which encourage responsible business behaviour.

The move follows correspondence between Georg Kell, executive director of the Compact, and Manfred Schekulin, chair of the OECD investment committee, in which both agreed that ‘intensifying linkages between Global Compact Local Networks and NCPs’ was desirable and that ‘possibilities for achieving this should be further explored’.

Schekulin has also invited the Compact to contribute to updating of the OECD Guidelines.

In a separate move, the Compact has set up a regional centre for Latin America and the Caribbean. The centre, based in Bogota, will serve as a focal point for the Compact in countries where it still does not have a network of signatory organizations.
