New ratings will place spotlight on all sectors

New CSR ratings for industry sectors are to be published six times a year by the sustainability consultancy Two Tomorrows.

The consultancy’s Value Ratings will benchmark companies on how well they manage their ‘most pressing’ social and environmental issues. A new list will come out every two months, ranking the largest companies in a globally important industry.   

The ratings are being billed as a successor to the Accountability Rating, which was run on a more ad hoc basis by the csrnetwork consultancy with the Accountability think tank.

The first rating – of the world’s ten largest hotel groups – has already been produced.

Two Tomorrows, which was formed from a merger of csrnetwork and Sd3 in January, said its research showed ‘overall poor performance’ in the sector. It found the ten companies generally provided little information on their sustainability efforts and performance, and ‘only a few demonstrate a systematic approach to managing social and environmental impacts’.

Accor, InterContinental Hotels (IHG) and Marriott were the three clear leaders. The rest were behind by a ‘wide margin’.

Accor led with 55 per cent because it was judged to have a ‘comprehensive approach’ to managing social and environmental risks and had set performance targets on many issues. Most groups were credited with having noted the big CSR issues they face, such as climate change, employment practices, community welfare, waste and sustainable buildings, but their approaches to them were largely ‘immature’.

Other important issues, including impacts on local cultures, the sustainability of franchisees and sex tourism, were considered only rarely, even though they were of concern to many stakeholders.

Most groups had some good sustainability management practices, but only the leaders had begun introducing these in the majority of their hotels. Sustainable purchasing, for instance, often covered only a narrow range of products, and green building practices were restricted to a few sites.

Only three of the ten published a sustainability report, compared with a rate that is nearer nine in ten among large companies in other sectors.

Two Tomorrows hopes to use the ratings as part of a paid-for ‘benchmarking service’ marketed to individual companies. Sectors due to be ranked in the near future are information technology, utilities, food and beverages and oil and gas.

Later this year the consultancy will produce an overall global rating of the world’s largest companies, as well as national ratings.
