Plans unveiled for carbon index

2009

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is to launch a series of investment indices for companies with strong carbon management strategies.

The index family, which will be launched in partnership with the financial information firm Markit, will be based on CDP's climate change data, with stock selection and weighting derived from the CDP's annual Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.

CDP and Markit plan to launch an index for the UK and Europe, in addition to US and global indices. The indices will be licensed to exchange-traded fund providers.

Paul Dickinson, chief executive of CDP, said: 'Climate change is a material issue for increasing numbers of companies and there are significant commercial opportunities for those with a strong carbon management strategy to benefit from the transition to a low carbon economy.'

The CDP is an independent not-for-profit organization holding the largest database of corporate climate change information in the world.
