China focal point gets big hitterJuly 2009
A high-ranking official has been appointed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to encourage ethical business policies in China.
Sean Gilbert, formerly director of the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework, has started work as the organization’s representative for the China Focal Point. He will be responsible for the GRI’s working relations with government, business, civil society bodies, labour groups, accountancy associations, the media and other stakeholders.
In his previous post Gilbert oversaw the development of the framework’s guidelines, supplements and protocols.
His achievements include publication of the G3 guidelines, expansion of the framework and research documents, report registration, and the involvement of members of new stakeholder groups, particularly investor-related organizations.
During his time in office he made several visits to China for the GRI.
Gilbert has wide experience of business environmental issues in Asia. Before joining the GRI, he was an independent consultant to investor, non-profit and business organizations on measuring sustainability performance.
The GRI will also establish a Focal Point in India this year, supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), a German-based international co-operation enterprise for sustainable development.
The GRI and GTZ aim to increase sustainability reporting in India by promoting the GRI and its Sustainability Reporting Framework among companies and other organizations.
