Kraft aims to reduce malnutrition ratesJune 2009
Kraft Foods and the Save the Children charity have formed a partnership to relieve malnutrition among Indonesian and Filipino families.
The three-year effort, financed with $3million (£2m) from the Kraft Foods Foundation, will support community-based meal distribution and provide nutrition education. It is expected to reach more than 180,000 children and families.
In Indonesia official figures show that 18 per cent of children under five are underweight, and the stunting rate, an indicator of chronic undernourishment, is 37 per cent. Feeding sessions and cooking demonstrations in Indonesia will teach families how to make and choose healthier and affordable food, as well as how to improve their feeding practices and care for children.
In the Philippines 2.9 million families are said by a national study to face hunger daily, so that 20 per cent of children under five and 25 per cent of all schoolchildren are underweight. The project there will provide nutritious meals and vitamin supplements to Filipino children and supply educational materials on children’s health, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene. In addition, volunteer health workers will be educated to recognize malnutrition so they can refer victims for treatment.
Kraft Foods volunteers in the Philippines will help with menu and food preparation, in-school feeding, take-home ration distributions and community garden planting.
The $3m donation is the largest community investment made by the company in Asia.
It is part of a three-year $180m commitment to fight hunger and support healthy lifestyles throughout the world.
