HK firms urged to support climate change initiativeMay 2009
A Hong Kong Carbon Reduction Campaign has been started by the Climate Group, an international non-profit organization whose aim is to promote a low-carbon economy.
The campaign, which runs until 31 March 2010, is Hong Kong’s first cross-industry collaboration among companies on climate change mitigation.
The purpose of the programme is to motivate participants to learn more about climate change and to minimize their consumption of energy and other resources so as to reduce carbon emissions.
The Climate Group has already given training sessions to employees from participating companies to guide them in cutting everyday activities that produce emissions. They all received a toolkit containing low-carbon gadgets such as an energy-efficient light bulb, a shower timer and a thermometer.
More tips on carbon emission reduction are being given on the campaign website, which includes a forum for participants to exchange views. A roving exhibition is touring participating companies’ offices to emphasize the importance of collective efforts.
The companies themselves are being encouraged to organize in-house events to sustain interest throughout the campaign.
Changhua Wu, the Climate Group’s Greater China director, said: ‘We strongly believe that the campaign will have a positive effect on business, improve the bond between employers and their staff, and effectively transfer low carbon practices to the home as well as families and friends.’
The campaign sponsors include the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and the HSBC Climate Partnership.
