Singapore hosts social stock exchangeMay 2009
Asia’s first social stock exchange is to open in Singapore. The Social Stock Exchange Asia (SSXA) will provide a trading platform and a capital trading mechanism for non-profit and for-profit Asian enterprises with a ‘social mission’.
It will connect these enterprises with investors wishing to provide capital to fund innovative social businesses.
Unlike other social stock exchanges, such as Bovespa in Brazil and Sasix in South Africa, which facilitate grants from philanthropists to non-profit groups, SSXA will try to attract real investments in economically viable social enterprises in Asia that can generate returns.
It will insist that providing social benefit is part of any listed company’s core mission.
SSXA will concentrate on social enterprises working in fields such as clean technology, social market initiatives, education, healthcare and microcredit.
