inspirational Deveshwar scoops award

November 2007

An industrialist who joined the Indian company ITC from college and became its chairman and chief executive has won the seventh annual SAM/SPG Sustainability Leadership Award for personal excellence in implementing sustainability principles.

The judges said that under Yogesh Chander Deveshwar there had been a remarkable transformation at ITC, a large private sector company embracing hotels, paperboards, a packaging agribusiness, packaged foods and information technology.

Since Deveshwar became chairman ITC had improved value for shareholders and achieved social goals at the same time, they said. Deveshwar’s vision for the company was ‘a commitment beyond the market’ and he had set up a centre of excellence for sustainable development, which promoted CSR.

Deveshwar was an engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi when he joined ITC in 1968. He became a director in 1984 and was made chairman and chief executive in 1996. He was president of the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2005-06.

SAM, or Sustainable Asset Management, is an independent investment management company based in Zurich. It set up SPG, the Sustainable Performance Group, as an investment company.
