Cohen to lead new taskforceApril 2000
The chairman of a venture capital company is to head a new search for ways to encourage greater social investment by businesses.
Ronald Cohen of Apax Partners will lead the Social Investment Taskforce, a working group to be managed by the UK Social Investment Forum, the New Economics Foundation and the Development Trusts Association, an umbrella organization for community regeneration groups.
The taskforce will report in the autumn with recommendations on how businesses can help regenerate communities and encourage community finance.
Its members, who are still being approached but will include senior figures from business, will be asked to identify the barriers to development of community finance initiatives and how financial services companies in particular can help.
The Treasury will have observer status on the taskforce, which will have no official government input but has been welcomed by chancellor Gordon Brown.
Cohen said he was keen to explore the idea of linking traditional philanthropy with the potential of venture capital.
