Birgden heads Mercer’s drive in Asia

October 2007

Helga Birgden, an experienced manager in governance and sustainable investment, has been appointed to lead the Asia-Pacific responsible investment business unit of Mercer Investment Consulting, a global provider of investment services.

Birgden has more than ten years’ experience of working with pension funds and other asset managers on voting, corporate engagement and regulatory reform, nationally and globally. Her most recent role was as manager of governance and sustainable investment at UniSuper, one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, where she developed and headed investment governance policies and the sustainable investment programme. She holds a Master of Enterprise Innovation (Business) from the leading finance programme at Swinburne University/Ernst & Young.

At Mercer she will advise Asia-Pacific investors on formulating responsible investment policies and integrating them into their investment programmes. She will research regional investment management products, and assess how mainstream Asia-Pacific fund managers vote, engage and assess environmental, social and corporate governance issues.

Birgden, who will be based in Melbourne, will place special emphasis on Australia, China, Japan, Korea and New Zealand.
