HSBC takes sustainable banking award

HSBC has been named Sustainable Bank of the Year in a new awards programme recognizing financial institutions that have shown ‘leadership and innovation’ on social, environmental and corporate governance matters.

HSBC impressed the judges with its integration of CSR issues ‘throughout its operations’ and its focus on ‘the opportunities as well as the risks of sustainability-related business’.

Banco ABN Amro Real of Brazil won Emerging Markets Sustainable Bank of the Year for ‘helping to set best practice’ in Latin America, while the team responsible for sustainable projects at German bank WestLB won the Sustainable Bankers of the Year award.

Sustainable Deal of the Year was won by Citigroup/Banamex and Financiera Compartamos of Mexico for their creation of an investment grade bond that promotes microcredit.
The awards attracted 90 entries from 48 institutions and are run by the International Finance Corporation, which is the private sector arm of the World Bank, and the Financial Times.
