Tobacco firm issues debut social report

March 2005

The Pakistan Tobacco Company has become the country’s first multinational to publish a social report.

The company, part of British American Tobacco, the second-biggest tobacco group, says it hopes this innovation will lead to a CSR industry in Pakistan. The company has the backing of the Musharraf administration, which has urged the private sector to share the official responsibility for social monitoring and reporting.

In preparing its report the company asked for the views of the government, the civil service, its commercial partners, smokers and non-smokers, elected representatives, non-governmental organizations, academics, doctors, farmers, the media and its own employees. The responses covered the issues of preventing smoking among the young, consumer information and research, responsible marketing, illicit trading, social investment and environmental protection.

The company already runs a programme in which travelling doctors can be consulted and is recognized for its forestation work, in which its policy is to plant four million trees a year. The report declares that all large businesses should observe CSR principles and protect stakeholders’ rights.
