Corporate social expenditures in South Africa grew by almost seven per cent last year. Statistics collected by the Cape Town-based Trialogue consultancy estimate that South African companies gave 2.35billion rand ($380m, £205m) last year, 6.8 per cent more than in 2002. Based on a survey of the total corporate social investment budget of 100 leading corporate donors, the average spend last year was about 13m rand.
