Nordic region gets set of ethical indices

December 2004

The first family of ethical indices specifically for companies in the Nordic region has been established by GES Investment Services and News Agency Direkt.

All companies listed in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm are eligible to join the indices, but those judged by GES to fall short of ethical criteria based on international standards such as the OECD guidelines for multinationals on the environment and human rights will be excluded.

Four of the index family cover companies listed in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. A fifth applies to the whole Nordic region. GES, formerly CaringCompany, is an SRI research agency and News Agency Direkt is a capital markets index provider in the region.

l Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria has set up Spain’s second largest socially responsible fund. The country’s second biggest bank already has €78million ($96m, £53m) under management in the newly formed BBVA Sustainable Development Investment Fund, which it will run using research from Innovest.
