EIRIS strengthens its overseas presence

December 2004

Europe’s largest provider of investor information on the social and environmental performance of companies is to open offices in New York and Tokyo.

Ethical Investment Research Services, which provides the SRI data for the FTSE4Good family of ethical indices and has more than 80 institutional and investment management company clients in the UK and Europe, told EP it has agreed to sever formal research ties with the two leading SRI research providers in the US and Japan.

London-based Eiris has used research provided by the Investor Responsibility Research Center in Washington and Tokyo-based Good Bankers to gather data on companies listed in the US and Japan for a number of years, as part of its strategy of partnering with other national data providers.

It will no longer use IRRC data on US companies, but will retain research links with Good Bankers, with whom it partnered in January 2003 to gain access to data on the CSR practices of almost 400 Japanese companies.

Eiris executive director Peter Webster told EP: ‘Asia Pacific and the US are the largest growth areas for us and we need to make a bigger commitment to those markets. ‘Our clients want us to be more global and it is important Eiris now has a presence overseas under its own name. The current 2004 research process will be completed with the IRRC and Good Bankers and we are very pleased to have had relationships with them.’ The decision would not affect EIRIS’s six other research partners, he stressed. ‘There are no plans to disturb those relationships,’ he said.

FTSE4Good said: ‘Eiris provides us with data, and whatever arrangements it makes in that regard is a matter for them.’
