Asia fares poorly in new index

December 2004

Korea has taken 40th place among 50 countries in a CSR index rating by Danish research institute The Copenhagen Centre, and the UK-based CSR institute Accountability. Korea's was one of several low Asian ratings - Vietnam was in position 41, China was 46th and Indonesia 50th.

Better ratings in the Asian sector were achieved by Japan in position 22, Singapore at 26 and Hong Kong at 29.

Despite the poor showing, the Federation of Korean Industries said: "Corporate citizenship is becoming a management keyword among Korean firms."

Countries were assessed by the researchers on corporate governance, ethical business practices, progressive policy formulation, building human capital, engagement with society, contribution to public finance and environment management.

Finland was in first place, the UK seventh and the US 23rd.
