Bennett Freeman is to head a new corporate responsibility unit set up by the US public relations firm Burson-Marsteller. Freeman, former US deputy assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labour, will be based in the firm’s US corporate and financial practice in Washington DC. He was formerly the firm’s principal of sustainable investment strategies and was influential in the US/UK government collaboration that resulted in oil and mining companies developing the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, which commit signatories to work with NGOs to limit conflicts arising from security measures taken in developing countries.
