mobile firms assuage fears

June 2003

One of the UK’s leading socially responsible investment fund managers says it has been ‘reassured’ by mobile phone operators over safety fears relating to the use of both handsets and masts.

Jupiter Asset Management was among fund managers that recently met Vodafone, MM02, T-Mobile and Orange to discuss the health concerns.

It says the meetings assured its analysts that the companies were carrying out an ‘extensive programme of research’ in this area, funded ‘on a fully independent basis’, with the World Health Organization carrying out some of the work.

Jupiter’s environmental research unit concludes that ‘despite understandable public worries, our research shows that a link between health effects and the use of mobile phones remains unproven’.

The fund management firm has suggested the companies provide more information at retail outlets on measures customers can reasonably take to reduce exposure to radiation. Among other companies it has engaged with are those in beverages, construction and mining.
