Rio Tinto woos the analysts

April 2003

Rio Tinto is to present its social and environmental report to mainstream analysts and brokers at special seminars in London and Sydney.

The multinational mining company, which published its latest report on the web last month, says it is holding the seminars in response to the greater interest shown by analysts for this information.

Figures released last year by Business in the Environment showed that only three per cent of analysts believe social and environmental issues are important in their work. However, Rio Tinto says an exploratory seminar it held in 2002 attracted 60 participants from mainstream investors, and this has encouraged the company to make the presentations an annual event. They will take place in mid-April (London) and early May (Sydney).

‘We have decided that seminars for the investment community on our social and environmental performance will now be part of our annual investor relations calendar,’ it said. ‘We will also do a series of one-on-one presentations with institutions on such issues.’
