inside intelligence for responsible business

consultants scent a growing UK market

August 1999

An international consultancy business has begun a UK trawl for experts in corporate social responsibility to cater for what it believes is a boom in demand for consultants in the field.

ERM Social Strategies, the corporate social responsibility wing of Environmental Resources Management, says that it is looking for senior consultants and researchers ‘in response to a growing need among our clients’ to address social and ethical business ideas.

‘There is action all over the place and we are reacting to that demand’, said Vicky Copeman, social development consultant at ERM. ‘This is a growing area for our clients and therefore for us. We’ve got our sights on a certain number of new recruits but we are flexible and if we get exciting people coming forward then we’ll recruit them.’

Copeman said it was not easy to find highly experienced consultants in such a new field. ‘There are lots of people out there with interesting but quite narrow perspectives. To find people with a broader perspective is quite hard,’ she added.

Oxford-based ERM Social Strategies was formed in 1997 and has worked on social and ethical issues for clients including BP Amoco and Shell.
