Abbey gets ethical habitJuly 1999
A new statement of ethical principles from Abbey National has promised to increase the company’s contact with local communities.
The statement, issued to all employees, says the bank will ‘build upon the common ground the company shares with individuals and organizations’ in communities where the company operates.
It also commits the UK’s fifth largest bank to strive to:
create ‘an atmosphere of openness and approachability’ for customers and staff
create permanent, not temporary, jobs whenever possible
take environmental factors into account when making investment and lending decisions
Green issues will also influence the design of Abbey National offices and its choice of suppliers.
The statement also tells staff they must not accept gifts and requires all departments to keep a record of hospitality received.
Abbey National said the statement was ‘not an exhaustive manifesto’ but would ‘serve as a prompt for an ongoing dialogue about how we can maintain our high ethical standards’.
