What types of businesses benefit from using a cardboard baler?

Guest column by QCR — Essentially, any business that produces waste cardboard could be in a position to warrant a cardboard baler. Balers are manufactured in different sizes and with different apertures to suit most business types. Let’s look at the typical business sectors that benefit strongly from utilising packing material crushers

Hospitality - pubs, restaurants and nightclubs
Businesses in the hospitality sector are ideal candidates for needing to get in touch with a cardboard baler supplier. Due to the size of the premises and how much cardboard these places commonly produce, one of the small balers is usually recommended. Deliveries of food and drink arrive in cardboard boxes, which once emptied need to be disposed of in an efficient manner. Due to space constraint at pubs, restaurants and nightclubs, bins are not the most effective method of waste disposal. As well the space issues bins create, they are also expensive to have emptied and they use up staff time. Placing a small cardboard baler in an indoor or outdoor waste area will enable cardboard bins to be removed from site; this frees up valuable space, removes the cost of bin lifts and eliminates the process of cardboard flat-packing, which is tedious and time consuming. Completed cardboard bales can in most cases be collected for free by a local recycler.

Retail outlets
Retailers small and large can both benefit from using a cardboard baler. Small retail outlets are likely to be found in town and city centres where space is tight. It is likely to be a similar story to that of pubs, restaurants and nightclubs due to the size of the building and waste area. What might be different in a retail outlet is the size of the boxes compared with a business in the hospitality sector. Whether they are wider, or deeper it does not really matter as there are small balers on the market with alternative apertures. Larger retail outlets like supermarkets or those in retail parks are more likely to require a bigger baler, which can cope with a more frequent flow of cardboard and possibly heftier boxes. A cardboard baler may be able to replace multiple bins and even a skip in this instance. Time saving is a more important aspect here as disposing of waste in bins and skips will require a longer walk each time, due to the size of the premises; bigger boxes will also take more time to flat-pack. Cardboard balers have a small footprint and so they can be placed close to the source of the waste. One disadvantage of bins is that they are voluminous, meaning they usually have to be located away from the work area, hence the walk to dispose of waste cardboard.

Distributors, manufacturers and suppliers
These business premises are likely to be of a similar size to a supermarket so a large to mill size baler will probably be required. In some cases where excessive waste cardboard is produced, a horizontal baler is necessary. This baler is ideal for high volume users and due to the size and weight of the finished product; revenue can be achieved, with rebates from a local recycler who will find these huge bales a valuable asset to their business. This is a far cry from high volumes of cardboard entering bins and skips where no revenue can possibly be achieved and the cost of collections is likely to be high. On top of this there are the aforementioned space and time saving benefits. Horizontal cardboard balers are noticeably larger than vertical balers but again they will always have a smaller footprint than multiple bins and skips and can be located close to the cardboard waste source.

These are the core business sectors that install cardboard balers but of course other business types can produce cardboard and benefit from a cardboard baler. Most are likely to fall into a similar category and require a comparable cardboard solution to those mentioned.

One other area where all businesses can benefit is the positive impact a cardboard baler can have on the environment and the green credentials of each business. Removing bins and skips means that overflowing mess no longer occurs, and the health and safety hazard of loose cardboard on the floor can be nullified. A cardboard baler keeps all cardboard compacted and neat. Bales can easily be stacked away in a quiet corner while awaiting collection. Government officials are highly more likely to favour a cardboard baler over bins and skips during an inspection and so will the general public, who will often judge a business badly if there is multiple overflowing bins and skips in view – this can be off-putting.
